Washington's iconic cherry trees reached peak bloom on Thursday, drawing crowds to the Tidal Basin, a site historically symbolic of Japan-U.S. diplomatic ties.
The cherry trees, a 1912 gift of 3,020 trees from Japan, mark an enduring symbol of amity between the nations.
These trees, planted near the Tidal Basin, East Potomac Park, and the Potomac River waterfront, attract visitors annually to witness their vibrant pink and white blossoms.
The blooms last only a few days.
Cool, calm weather helps them stay, but rain, wind, or heat can strip petals fast.
