There is a LOT to Be Thankful For Every Year

The enemy is trying everything he can to destroy you, your family, your loved ones, your life…

No stores never mind supermarkets

No electricity

No stoves, not even the cast iron ones (that came later in the 1800s for mosy of the country)

No appliances

No refidgerator nor freezer…

So how on earth did they prepare a Thanksgiving dinner?

YT channel Early American will show you how - and you’ll get a new appreciation for all your modern kitchen conveniences

From the video description…

Thanksgiving originated as a Christian holiday to give thanks to God for the year’s blessings.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Thanksgiving feast did not necessarily include turkey, stuffing, or pumpkin pie like it does today.

However, since pumpkins and turkey ARE in season in November, many Thanksgiving feasts did include these foods, which, over time, evolved to be closely associated with the holiday.

In the Federal Era, the typical Thanksgiving meal consisted of what you could afford and what you could source.

This may have been wild game birds, chickens, venison, pork, beef, corn, yams, carrots, and other fall vegetables, bread, pies, etc.

By the time we reach the mid-1800s, turkey was already closely associated with the holiday.

Advice for Thanksgiving Family Conversations

If your family is divided, avoid politics and political jabs altogether. That does NOT mean everything will go smoothly; most likely, you will find yourself guarded throughout the holiday.

I know, as my own mostly Liberal family, once ONE person started with a political jab, they were like a pitbull fighting over a side of beef. Ignoring the jabs only provoked them to jab all the more.

My last Thanksgiving with them, I had fallen asleep on the living room floor where they left me, not only for dinner but for dessert as well. I was tired because my client wanted to squeeze a week’s worth of work into 3 days, which was followed by my flight home, which usually took 3 hours, turned into 12, leaving me with 2 hours to sleep before driving 4-1/2 hours to my family. I had had maybe 6 hours of sleep since Sunday before traveling to be with my family. By the time I woke up, everyone had finished eating, the dishes had been cleaned, and everyone was having a conversation elsewhere in the house.

I just ate whatever was served, remained polite, and left before everyone else. I had had enough of the teenage-like mockery that went on before I fell asleep. Only one family member noticed I was ticked, or as she said later, royally ticked.

I only share that so you understand that keeping your anger under control and shutting your mouth IS an option. We all choose how to react, and mine was subdued as asking why I was left on the floor while everyone ate would have started another tirade of teenage mockery that would eventually have someone slinging politics into it all.

Enough was enough.

A pastor later reminded me that Christ never remained where there was a lack of faith; he just moved on to what was next.

So, some advice about conversing during Thanksgiving with your family…

The 1st best thing you can do is pray BEFORE you get to your destination - pray for wisdom, for the words to say while at your destination, and for the seeds to plant as well.

The 2nd BEST thing you can do IF you find a need to push back on political talk is KNOW the facts about your favorite candidate(s), as well as those challenging them. As with any Liberals, they take silence as their victory and will even dance around a dead body to enjoy their victory. But always be civil, they are trying to take you down, and your remaining at the top of the hill is the BEST example of character you can display.

If you have not done this daily or frequently, a few days before Thanksgiving will find you not well prepared. So lesson learned for the future.

Talk about the future of each person, not their past… In the real world, friends always talk about your future, your enemies speak about your past, and that carries over into family as well.

If things remain uncivil, cut your visit short - and do so respectfully. Their reaction is not your problem, and never make it your problem. You need to be accountable only to yourself - and your own family if you have one. Your kids will be taking mental notes the entire Thanksgiving holiday. Give them something that will speak well of you, and they will do well as your family.

One last piece of advice - your adversary, even if in your family, is a blessing…

Make it a great Thanksgiving - we are still a great nation, and we are getting stronger and greater every day, just as long as we remember Who made all this possible.
