President Donald Trump on Monday (11 Aug 2025) officially invoked Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, placing the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under direct federal control as part of a "historic" effort to combat crime in the nation’s capital.

“This is Liberation Day in D.C.,” Trump said in his major announcement, declaring a crime emergency in the city, calling the move necessary to “take our capital back".

He said the situation in D.C. is “out of control."
