Miami Mayoral Election Results Analysis
And it is not as grand a victory as the Democrats are claiming - here's why...
In the Miami mayoral runoff election held on December 9, 2025, Democrat Eileen Higgins defeated Republican Emilio Gonzalez, becoming Miami’s first Democratic mayor in nearly 30 years.
Higgins secured approximately 59% of the vote, while Gonzalez, who President Donald Trump endorsed, received about 41%.
The election was technically nonpartisan, but both major political parties were involved, with the Democratic National Committee supporting Higgins and President Trump endorsing Gonzalez.
The victory also marks the first time a woman has been elected mayor of Miami and the first non-Hispanic candidate since the 1990s.
The Miami mayoral election was seen as a significant political event, attracting national attention as a test of voter sentiment.
Sources indicate that Miami-Dade County, where the city of Miami is located, has shifted towards Republicans in recent presidential elections, with President Trump winning the county in 2024 after losing it in 2020.
Despite this trend, Higgins’s victory is noted as a boost for Democrats, with the Democratic National Committee chair, Ken Martin, stating it was a “warning sign to Republicans.” Conversely, the Miami-Dade GOP Chair, Kevin Cooper, downplayed the results, suggesting it was simply a “Democratic city elects Democratic mayor.”
The Numbers
How many registered voters are there in Miami, by political affiliation?
As of May 19, 2025, there were
464,370 registered Republicans (34% of voters)
440,790 Democrats (32.27%)
independent and third-party voters totaling 460,783 (33.7%)
This shift indicates that registered Republicans now outrank Democrats in Miami-Dade County, marking a change for the traditionally Democratic stronghold.
The total number of registered voters is 1,365,943…
Voter turnout for the runoff was reported at 21.34%, with fewer than 37,000 votes cast…
That means fewer than 2.7% of registered voters cast their ballots.
Hmmm…
Seems the Florida GOP has to get off their duff and get out the vote…
Now Miami will have to face 4 years of Democrat oversight - for not having voted as they should have…
We’ll be keeping close tabs on the direction Miami is taken…
