The FBI has recovered a “bolt-action, high-powered rifle” in a wooded area near an area where the assassin of Charlie Kirk fled, said the bureau’s local field office director on Thursday morning.
The FBI also has “good video footage of this individual” and that the bureau has “tracked his movements,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls in a news conference.
Law enforcement officials said the suspect they are seeking “appears to be of college age” and “blended in” with students on the college campus.
Kirk was killed with a gunshot from a rooftop at the Utah Valley University campus, where he was speaking on Wednesday, officials said.
As the search stretched into a 2nd day, they provided little information about the shooter’s identity, motive, location, or evidence, and were reviewing grainy security videos of a mysterious person in dark clothing.
Our Note
It is not uncommon not to release too much information this early into an investigation.
They know the assassin is listening as well, and tipping their own hand would only give the assassin an advantage.
